Haggai 1:10-11
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
The verse emphasizes that even the dew, a gentler form of moisture essential for crops, is withheld. This isn't just about a lack of rain, but a profound withholding of nature's bounty, showing how deeply God's displeasure affects the very ability of the land to sustain life. It highlights that God's judgment can touch the most fundamental elements we rely on for survival.
Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Haggai has just rebuked the people of Judah for prioritizing the rebuilding of their own homes over God's temple. Because of this neglect, God declares through Haggai that He has sent a drought, withholding the life-giving dew and rain, which in turn has caused the land to yield no crops. This judgment is a direct consequence of their misplaced priorities, meant to bring them back to their senses about what truly matters.
Ever felt like the world itself is pushing back when you're not in sync with God? The people of Judah were experiencing just that.
The prophet Haggai delivers a stark message: the very heavens and earth are responding to the people's disobedience.
A Divine Restraint
This shows that our spiritual condition isn't just personal; it has tangible effects on the world around us, as nature itself reflects God's favor or disfavor.
Why would the heavens and earth turn against God's people? The reason is tied directly to their priorities.
The immediate context for Haggai's prophecy is the people's failure to rebuild the Temple.
A Matter of Priorities

This teaches us that when we neglect the things of God – His presence, His worship, His called-out community – we can expect His blessing to be withheld. Our 'fruitfulness' is often tied to our faithfulness in honoring Him.

gillHaggai 1:10: "Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit."
Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew,.... Or, "therefore over", or "upon you" (a); where should be a stop; that is, because, of your neglect of the house of God; therefore upon you, and upon you only, and not upon other nations, the heaven is restrained from letting down the dew: or, "therefore I am against you" (b); for the above reason, and which the following things show; and…
jfbHaggai 1:10: "Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit."
- heaven … is stayed from dew—literally, "stays itself." Thus heaven or the sky is personified; implying that inanimate nature obeys Jehovah's will; and, shocked at His people's disobedience, withholds its goods from them (compare Jer 2:12, 13).
