Birds build nests for safety, but the prophet uses this imagery to condemn a dangerous delusion. What does it mean to 'set your nest on high'?
The imagery of setting one's 'nest on high' is powerful. Like an eagle building its nest on inaccessible cliffs, the oppressor seeks to elevate themselves and their household to a position of unassailable security. This 'high nest' represents a fortress of wealth, power, and fortification, designed to be 'safe from the reach of harm.' However, the prophet reveals this as a grand illusion. The very means used to achieve this security – the 'evil gain' and the resulting elevation – actually lead to their downfall. Their 'stronghold' becomes the very thing that attracts judgment. True security, from a biblical perspective, doesn't come from lofty, self-made fortresses, but from faithfulness to God and justice.
