Genesis 8:20-22

What does Genesis 8:20-22 mean?

The very first thing Noah does upon reaching dry land isn't building a home or tending to crops; he builds an altar to God. This highlights that, even after a catastrophic judgment and miraculous preservation, worship and acknowledging God's sovereignty were Noah's immediate priority, setting the tone for the new world.

Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

What Genesis 8:20-22 means

After enduring the flood for over a year, Noah and his family are finally commanded by God to leave the ark and repopulate the earth. As soon as they step onto dry land, Noah's very first act is to build an altar and offer a sacrifice, demonstrating that his primary concern is worship and gratitude, even in this new beginning. This act of thanksgiving sets the stage for God's covenant promise not to destroy the earth by flood again.

Prioritizing God After Deliverance

Imagine stepping out onto dry land after months trapped on a boat. What's the very first thing you'd want to do? For Noah, it wasn't building a house or exploring, but something far more profound.

Noah's immediate action upon leaving the ark wasn't for personal comfort but for divine worship. He 'built an altar to the LORD.' This highlights a crucial principle: our first response after experiencing God's deliverance should be to honor Him. It’s easy to get caught up in securing our own well-being, but Noah's example calls us to first acknowledge the Giver of life and provision.

This wasn't just a casual gesture. Building an altar and offering sacrifices were significant acts of devotion, signifying a commitment to God's ways. It shows that even after a world-ending event, spiritual priorities remained paramount.

The Significance of Clean and Unclean

Noah didn't just grab any animal for his sacrifice. The text specifically mentions 'clean' animals. Why does this distinction matter so much, even here?

The selection of 'every clean animal and every clean bird' for sacrifice points to a divine order already established. This distinction between clean and unclean wasn't arbitrary; it indicated what was suitable for worship and relationship with God. While the full laws of clean and unclean were later given through Moses, the principle was present from the beginning.

Noah's offering, comprised of these 'clean' creatures, represented the best he had. It was a sacrifice that God could accept, foreshadowing a time when only purity would be acceptable in His presence. This act highlights that our worship and offerings to God must align with His standards, not just our own intentions.
