What's easily missed is that "walking in the garden" wasn't just God pacing; it suggests a deliberate, familiar circuit, like a gardener checking on his plants. Their hiding among the trees, rather than running to meet Him, reveals the immediate, profound shift from intimate fellowship to fearful avoidance caused by their sin.
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Adam and Eve have just eaten the forbidden fruit and their eyes are now "opened" to their nakedness, leading them to fashion crude coverings from fig leaves. In the midst of their newfound shame and fear, they hear the Lord God walking in the garden, a familiar sound that has now become terrifying. Instead of approaching God, they try to hide from His presence among the trees, realizing their disobedience has fundamentally changed their relationship with their Creator.
Before the fall, God didn't just visit; He walked with humanity. What does it mean that His presence was a regular, even anticipated, part of their day?
The text tells us God was 'walking in the garden in the cool of the day.' This wasn't a rare or terrifying event. Imagine a comforting, familiar sound, like a loved one approaching. This was the regular rhythm of life for Adam and Eve before their sin. God's presence wasn't something to hide from; it was their delight.
Suddenly, the familiar sound of God brings terror, not joy. What happened to transform God's presence from a comfort to a threat?
The immediate reaction of Adam and Eve was to hide. This is the stark reality of sin – it separates us from God and introduces fear.

And they heard the voice of the Lord God,.... Which they had heard before, and knew, though perhaps now in another tone, and very terrible, which before was mild and gentle, pleasant and delightful: some by it understand a clap of thunder, sometimes called the voice of the Lord, Psalm 29:3 an…

The voice of the Lord - The voice is properly used here, for as God is an infinite Spirit, and cannot be confined to any form, so he can have no personal appearance. It is very likely that God used to converse with them in the garden, and that the usual time was the decline of the day, לרוח ה…
