Adam didn't just eat the fruit; he listened to his wife. But was that the real issue? God’s response cuts through excuses to reveal a deeper truth.
Adam’s immediate response to God’s question isn’t an admission of guilt but a deflection: “The woman whom you gave me… she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:12). He’s pointing the finger, not just at Eve, but at God for giving her to him.
But God’s judgment doesn’t let Adam off the hook. He says, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife… cursed is the ground because of you.”
Notice the crucial word: “because.” While Adam tried to shift blame, God declares that Adam’s choice to listen to his wife over God has direct consequences.
This teaches us a vital lesson: Excuses might feel good in the moment, but they don’t change reality. True responsibility means owning our choices, even when they’re influenced by others, and facing the consequences God lays out.
