What's really striking here is Esau’s chilling calculation. He doesn’t just vow revenge; he specifically links it to his father’s anticipated death and the subsequent mourning period, implying he’d use the solemnity and potential distraction of that time to carry out his plan. This reveals a profound shallowness in his grief and a deep-seated malice that sees even his father's passing as an opportune moment for bloodshed.
Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jacob has just deceived his father, Isaac, and stolen the patriarchal blessing meant for his older brother, Esau. Enraged and feeling betrayed, Esau vows revenge against Jacob, planning to kill him after their father's imminent death. This threat is overheard by Rebekah, Jacob's mother, who then orchestrates Jacob's hasty departure to her brother Laban's home for his safety.
Esau's world shattered not just because he lost a blessing, but because of the deep hatred that boiled up inside him.
The verse tells us Esau 'hated Jacob because of the blessing.' This wasn't just simple disappointment; it was a profound, consuming hatred. The blessing Isaac gave Jacob wasn't just a nice wish; it was a declaration of God's favor and a promise of inheritance, something deeply significant in that culture.
Esau felt robbed of his destiny and his future. His reaction shows how much he valued the spiritual and material inheritance tied to the blessing. This hatred festered, leading him to plot violence against his own brother.
Esau's plan for revenge was calculated, waiting for the 'right' moment to strike his brother.
Esau didn't immediately lash out. Instead, he said to himself, 'The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.' This reveals a strategic, albeit sinister, plan. He saw his father's impending death not just as a time of grief, but as an opportune moment for vengeance.
In that culture, sons were expected to be present for their father's burial. Esau likely believed that during the funeral rites, when Jacob would be distracted and vulnerable, he could enact his revenge. This shows a coldness and a desire to sever Jacob from his family and future, all fueled by his hatred.
