Genesis 21:1-5

The verse emphasizes God's active faithfulness not just by stating He fulfilled His promise, but by repeating the action in two distinct but related ways: first, He "visited" Sarah (implying His gracious attention and intervention), and then He "did" to her what He had spoken (highlighting the tangible fulfillment). This repetition underscores that God's promise wasn't just a declaration, but an event He personally brought to pass in Sarah's life.
The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After years of waiting and Abraham's faith being tested, God finally fulfills His promise to give Sarah a son. This verse marks the beginning of Isaac's birth and the fulfillment of God's covenant with Abraham, setting the stage for the subsequent events of Ishmael's rejection and Isaac's upbringing.
The Bible uses the word "visited" in powerful ways, and here it's not just a casual check-in. It signifies God's direct, personal intervention in Sarah's life.
When the Bible says "the LORD visited Sarah," it's describing God's active engagement. This isn't passive observation; it's God drawing near to fulfill His specific purpose.
God's Purposeful Engagement
Why does the verse repeat almost the same idea? It's not just for emphasis; it's a theological statement about God's unwavering character.
The repetition in Genesis 21:1 – "visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had spoken" – powerfully underscores God's faithfulness.
