Abraham repeats a past mistake, putting himself and Sarah in danger. How does God intervene when human plans falter?
This journey leads Abraham to Gerar, where he once again denies that Sarah is his wife out of fear. The commentary notes that this is a repeat of a similar incident in Egypt (Genesis 12). Abraham's rationale, "Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake," reveals a profound distrust in God's protective power.
However, even in Abraham's moment of weakness and deception, God's faithfulness is on full display. Before Abimelech, the king of Gerar, can even fully comprehend the situation, God intervenes directly in a dream. This shows that God's covenant promises and protection are not dependent on our perfect obedience or flawless faith. He watches over His people, even when they stumble, ensuring His purposes are not thwarted.
