Genesis 15:2-6

What does Genesis 15:2-6 mean?

Abram's question isn't just about a lack of children; it's a direct challenge to the nature of God's promised blessing. He’s essentially asking, "What good is any 'reward' if the one person who can inherit it isn't even my son, but a servant from a foreign land?"

But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

What Genesis 15:2-6 means

Just moments after God appeared to Abram in a vision, promising to be his shield and reward, Abram expresses a deep concern. He understands that the incredible promises hinge on having an heir, but given his age and childlessness, his own servant Eliezer of Damascus is poised to inherit everything. Abram’s question isn’t a lack of faith in God’s power, but a heartfelt plea for clarity on how these grand promises can possibly be fulfilled through him.

The Weight of Unfulfilled Promises

God had just spoken a grand promise to Abram, calling him His 'exceeding great reward.' Yet, Abram's immediate response isn't one of unbridled joy. Why?

Abram, despite the incredible reassurance from God, voices a deep concern rooted in his childlessness.

A Stark Reality

God's promises often feel distant when our present circumstances scream a different story. For Abram, the 'great reward' felt hollow without an heir to inherit it all. His question, 'What will you give me?' isn't a dismissal of God's word, but an honest wrestling with how it could possibly come to pass.

The Heir Apparent

He names Eliezer of Damascus as the potential heir. This wasn't just any servant; Eliezer was responsible for all of Abram's household. The implication is clear: if Abram dies without a child, this man, not of Abram's own bloodline, would inherit everything. This starkly contrasts with the grand, world-changing promises God had made, which were tied to Abram's offspring.

The Divine Name and Abram's Plea

Abram addresses God with a powerful combination of divine names. What does this reveal about his plea, and how does God respond to it?

The way Abram addresses God is significant. He uses 'Lord GOD,' which in the original Hebrew is 'Adonai Yahweh.'

Titles of Authority and Relationship

'Adonai' signifies Lord or Master, acknowledging God's supreme authority and sovereignty. 'Yahweh' is God's covenant name, revealing His personal relationship and faithfulness to His people. By using both, Abram is acknowledging God's absolute power to give or withhold, while also appealing to the God who had already made specific promises to him.
