Galatians 4:9-11

The profound truth here is that our knowledge of God is not something we achieve first, but rather a response to God's initiative in knowing us. Before we ever truly grasp who He is, He has already recognized, chosen, and drawn us to Himself, making our returning to weak, empty practices not just a mistake, but a profound rejection of His grace.
But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? You observe days and months and seasons and years! I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is grappling with the Galatians, who have seemingly embraced certain religious rules and practices that undermine the freedom found in Christ. He reminds them that their relationship with God is not a mere human achievement but a divine initiative where God first knew and called them. Turning back to these "weak and worthless principles" is a rejection of the rich, liberating reality of God's grace they've already experienced.
The verse talks about 'knowing God,' but then corrects itself to 'being known by God.' What's the big deal about this switch?
The Apostle Paul makes a crucial distinction here. He starts by saying the Galatians 'have come to know God.' This sounds like they took the initiative, actively pursuing God. But then he offers a profound correction: 'or rather to be known by God.'
God's Sovereign Knowledge
Paul calls the things the Galatians are turning back to 'weak and worthless.' What exactly are these 'elements' and why are they so bad?
Paul contrasts the glorious reality of being known by God with 'the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world.' He's referring to religious systems and rules that, while perhaps having some outward structure, are fundamentally powerless to bring true life or salvation.

Understanding 'Elements'
Paul asks, 'whose slaves you want to be once more?' Why would anyone want to go back into slavery?
This is the heartbreaking core of Paul's lament. The Galatians aren't just passively drifting back; they are actively desiring to be enslaved again to these weak elements. This reveals a deep spiritual delusion.

Understand the original words
stoicheion · Greek Noun
The fundamental principles, basic teachings, or rudimentary practices that characterize the world system; often associated with human efforts or religious rituals that lack the life-giving power of the Gospel.
kopiaō · Greek Verb
In an evangelical context, this refers to working hard, often in ministry, with the goal of spiritual fruitfulness. Paul uses it here to describe his apostolic ministry of establishing the Galatians in the truth of the gospel.
eikē · Greek Adverb
A term used to describe something done without purpose, success, or lasting value. Paul expresses concern that the Galatians' abandonment of the gospel renders his ministry among them empty of its intended spiritual impact.
The Galatians were Gentiles who had come to know God through the Gospel. Some teachers, the Judaizers, were insisting they also adopt Jewish law and customs for salvation. Paul's strong words in this verse condemn this 'turning back' to the elementary principles of the world, which represent a return to bondage after experiencing the freedom found in Christ's grace.
c. 49 AD
Apostolic Council in Jerusalem
The Council of Jerusalem addressed the issue of whether Gentile believers needed to follow Mosaic Law. It affirmed that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ, not by adherence to the Law, setting a precedent for Paul's arguments.
c. 53-55 AD— this verse
Paul's Letter to the Galatians
Paul writes this letter in response to reports that some Gentile believers in Galatia were being pressured by Judaizers to adopt Jewish customs and circumcision, essentially seeking salvation through the Law.
c. 56 AD
Paul's Defense at Jerusalem
Though not directly about the Galatian issue, Paul's later defense before Jewish leaders in Jerusalem, recounting his ministry to the Gentiles, highlights the core tension between grace and law.
This passage emphasizes the unfathomable riches and wisdom of God, contrasting it with human attempts to grasp divine knowledge through 'elements,' similar to how Galatians contrasts the 'weak and worthless principles' with the true knowledge of God.
1 Corinthians 8:3This verse speaks about the reciprocal nature of 'knowing God' – that to truly know God is to be known by Him, mirroring the corrective emphasis in Galatians 4:9 that the Galatians are 'known by God' rather than just knowing Him.
Hebrews 7:18This passage directly addresses the 'weakness' of the old Levitical law, stating it made nothing perfect. This directly supports Paul's critique of the 'weak and worthless elementary principles' that the Galatians were turning back to.
John 1:10This verse highlights the world's failure to recognize Jesus even though He was in the world and known by it. This resonates with the Galatians' failure to recognize the significance of God's work in them, turning instead to lesser things.
Deuteronomy 30:19This verse presents a choice between life and death, blessing and curse. It parallels the choice the Galatians face: embracing the freedom in Christ or returning to bondage under the law's elementary principles.

But now, after that ye have known God, God in Christ, as their covenant God and Father, through the preaching of the Gospel, and in the light of divine grace; God having caused light to shine in their dark hearts; and having given them the light of the knowledge of himself in the face of Christ, and having sent down…
