The phrase "elements of the world" isn't just about basic religious teachings, but points to the very systems and forces of the present age that bind us, whether they be religious rituals or worldly philosophies, before we experience true freedom in Christ. These "rudiments" are characterized as enslaving because they focus on external rules and temporary observances, keeping us like minors instead of mature children of God.
In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is explaining that before Christ, everyone, whether Jew or Gentile, was like a child heir, living under strict supervision and bound by basic religious principles, much like a minor is subject to guardians. This state of immaturity, characterized by external rules and rituals, was temporary and preparatory, awaiting the time when they would come of age in Christ and receive the full inheritance.
Before we knew Christ, we were like kids under strict rules. What were these 'lessons' and why did they feel like slavery?
Paul uses a powerful analogy: before we experienced the freedom of Christ, we were like children who haven't yet come of age. In this 'childhood' phase, we were bound by the 'elementary principles of the world.'
What are these 'elements'?
Paul contrasts our past 'childhood' under rules with the present reality of being God's children. What changed, and what does it mean to be a true 'son' in God's family?
The core of Paul's argument here is about a transition from a state of immaturity and servitude to one of mature sonship and freedom.
