The promise that makes us children of God connects us to something far greater than earthly lineage – it links us to a heavenly reality.
The apostle Paul uses the story of Isaac to illustrate a profound truth about our spiritual family.
Allegory of Two Covenants
Paul's argument in Galatians 4 contrasts two mothers and their children:
- Hagar, the slave woman, represents the earthly Jerusalem and the covenant given at Mount Sinai (the Law). Her children (like Ishmael) are born into slavery and seek righteousness through their own efforts.
- Sarah, the free woman, represents the heavenly Jerusalem and the new covenant of grace. Her children (like Isaac) are born by promise and are free.
Our New Citizenship
By comparing believers to Isaac, Paul declares that we are children of Sarah, the free woman. We belong to the 'Jerusalem above,' which is free and is our mother. Our identity is not tied to the old system of the Law, but to the new reality of God's grace through faith in Christ, making us citizens of a heavenly city.
