Galatians 4:21-31

What does Galatians 4:21-31 mean?

Paul challenges the Galatians by pointing out the irony: those eager to live under the Law, seeking its rules for righteousness, fail to "hear" what the Law itself says about bondage. The word "hear" here isn't just about listening; it's about truly understanding and heeding the message inherent within the Law's own narrative.

Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.” Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Galatians 4:21-31 means

Paul directly challenges the Galatians who are leaning toward Jewish law, asking if they truly understand what the Law itself teaches. He is about to launch into an allegory using Abraham's sons, Hagar and Sarah, to illustrate that seeking righteousness through the Law leads to bondage, while faith in Christ brings true freedom as God's children. This argument flows from his previous emphasis on freedom in Christ and contrasts it with the servitude of those who try to earn God's favor through legalistic observance.

A Double Meaning of 'Law'

Paul throws a curveball with the word 'law' in this verse. He uses it in two distinct ways, and understanding that difference is key to his whole argument.

Paul is playing with the word 'law' (nomos in Greek) here.

'Under the law': When he addresses those who 'desire to be under the law,' he's talking about adhering to the Mosaic Law as a path to righteousness or salvation. This is the legalistic, works-based approach the Judaizers were pushing.
'Do you not hear the law?': When he asks, 'do you not hear the law?', he's referring to the Scriptures themselves – the books of the Old Testament, particularly the Pentateuch (the first five books).

He's essentially saying, 'You want to live by the rules of the Old Testament law? Then why aren't you listening to what the Old Testament Scriptures themselves actually teach about it?' It’s a clever rhetorical move to turn their own supposed authority against them.

Listening to the Law's True Voice

Paul challenges the Galatians: If you're so committed to the Law, why aren't you 'hearing' what it's actually saying?

The phrase 'do you not hear?' isn't just about passive listening; it's about heedless listening. Paul is accusing them of being willfully ignorant of the Law's own testimony.

The historical timeline around Galatians 4:21-31

Paul uses the story of Abraham's sons, Ishmael (born of a slave, Hagar) and Isaac (born of a free woman, Sarah), to illustrate the stark difference between living under the bondage of the Law and living in the freedom of God's grace through faith in Christ. The 'law' referred to is not just the commandments, but the entire covenant system tied to it, which the Judaizers were pushing the Galatians to adopt, creating a spiritual slavery.

~1896 BC

Birth of Ishmael

Ishmael, son of Abraham and Hagar (a slave), is born. This event marks the beginning of a lineage born according to human effort and circumstance, rather than divine promise.

~1895 BC

Birth of Isaac

Isaac, son of Abraham and Sarah (a free woman), is born miraculously according to God's promise. This signifies a birth by faith and divine intervention, representing those who are free through God's covenant.

~1446 BC

Giving of the Law at Mount Sinai

God gives the Mosaic Law to Israel at Mount Sinai. This event establishes the Old Covenant, a system of rules and regulations intended to guide God's people but which could also lead to bondage if pursued as a means of salvation.

~1000 BC

Construction of Jerusalem's First Temple

Solomon completes the First Temple in Jerusalem, the center of worship for Israel. This earthly Jerusalem is later contrasted with the heavenly Jerusalem.

c. 586 BC

Destruction of Jerusalem and Temple

The Babylonians conquer Jerusalem and destroy the First Temple, leading to the exile of many Jews. This event highlights the consequences of unfaithfulness to God's covenant.

c. 516 BC

Rebuilding of Jerusalem's Second Temple

The Second Temple is completed in Jerusalem after the return from Babylonian exile. This marks a restoration but also a period where the Law was heavily emphasized, sometimes to the exclusion of grace.

c. AD 50-55— this verse

Paul writes the Epistle to the Galatians

Paul writes his letter to the churches in Galatia, addressing the dangerous influence of Judaizers who insisted on circumcision and adherence to the Mosaic Law for salvation. He uses the allegory of Hagar and Sarah to argue that true freedom and sonship come through faith in Christ, not through adherence to the Law.
