Paul could have piled on argument after argument, but he chose just ONE. What makes this single point so powerful in convincing the Galatians?
Paul starts his case with a direct, personal question: 'This only would I learn of you...' (Galatians 3:2). He’s not asking for a complex theological treatise. He's appealing to their own undeniable experience.
The Power of Experience
He narrows his focus to one crucial element: how they received the Holy Spirit. He contrasts two possibilities:
- Works of the Law: Following rules and rituals.
- Hearing with Faith: Believing the message of the gospel.
Paul knows the answer is obvious to them. They didn't earn God's Spirit by trying to keep the Law; they received it when they heard and believed the good news about Jesus. This direct appeal to their memory and experience is his starting point for demonstrating that true spiritual life comes through faith, not legalistic effort.
