Galatians 3:15-17

Paul uses a common human agreement as an analogy to highlight God's faithfulness. What's easy to miss is that he's not just saying God's promises are as solid as human contracts; he's actually arguing that they are far more unchangeable, since even flawed humans honor their ratified agreements. This means any attempt to add to God's original promise to Abraham is an invalid intrusion, not a clarification.
To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul uses a common human agreement as an illustration: once a contract or covenant between people is finalized, no one can legally change its terms or cancel it. He's setting up an argument to show how much more God's own promise to Abraham, established before the law, is unchangeable and eternally binding. This human analogy helps the Galatians understand why the addition of Mosaic Law couldn't override God's original, gracious promise.
When we make a deal, we expect it to stick. Paul uses this common-sense idea to make a powerful point about God's promises.
Paul starts by saying, 'I speak after the manner of men.' This means he's using an illustration from everyday human life to explain a spiritual truth.
The Power of a Ratified Agreement
He points out that even a human agreement, once it's officially confirmed or ratified, cannot be easily changed. No one can just decide to cancel it or add new rules to it without consequences.
An Argument from the Lesser to the Greater
This is an 'argument from the less to the greater.' If even human agreements, which are often broken or altered, are meant to be binding once confirmed, how much more so is God's covenant? God's faithfulness is far beyond human reliability, so His promises are absolutely unchangeable.
Paul introduces a stark contrast that cuts to the heart of the Galatian believers' struggle. It's not about adding to a covenant; it's about understanding two fundamentally different ways God relates to humanity.
The core of Paul's argument here is that God's covenant with Abraham was different from the Law given later.
The Abrahamic Covenant: A Promise
This covenant, established with Abraham, was based on God's and Abraham's . It was a gift of grace, not earned by works. Paul emphasizes that this promise was made to Abraham and his 'seed,' pointing ultimately to Christ.

The Mosaic Law: Conditions and Additions
The Law, introduced centuries later, brought specific commands and conditions. While it had its purpose, Paul argues that it cannot annul or add to the original promise. To try and make the Law the basis for salvation, instead of the promise, is to fundamentally misunderstand and corrupt God's gracious plan. It's like trying to add new clauses to a signed contract that fundamentally change its original intent.
