Did Paul and Peter preach different versions of the Good News? Or was it something else entirely that was divided between them?
The phrase 'gospel of the uncircumcision' and 'gospel of the circumcision' might sound like there were two distinct gospels. But the scholars and the text make it clear: there is only one Gospel. The division wasn't in the message, but in the mission.
One Message, Two Ministries:
- Paul was entrusted with the 'gospel of the uncircumcision,' meaning his primary calling and focus was to bring the Good News to the Gentiles (non-Jews).
- Peter was entrusted with the 'gospel of the circumcision,' meaning his main ministry was to the Jews.
This was a strategic division of labor, recognized by the leaders in Jerusalem. It wasn't about changing the core message of salvation through Christ, but about effectively reaching different people groups. Both apostles preached the same essential truth, but their primary spheres of ministry were distinct.
