The phrase "not even Titus" is crucial, highlighting that even a close companion like Titus, who was fully integrated into Paul's ministry, was not forced to undergo circumcision. This wasn't just about one person; it was a deliberate stand against the idea that Gentile believers needed to adopt Jewish customs to be truly part of God's people.
But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul recounts a visit to Jerusalem where he met with the apostles to discuss his gospel message to the Gentiles. While there, a key test case arose with his uncircumcised Gentile companion, Titus, which demonstrated that the apostles recognized Paul's ministry and did not force Gentile believers to adopt Jewish customs. This incident directly addressed the pressure from certain "false brethren" who sought to undermine the freedom of the gospel by demanding adherence to the law.
Paul brought an uncircumcised Gentile, Titus, to a meeting with key leaders in Jerusalem. This wasn't a minor detail – it was a test case for the very heart of the gospel.
The Jerusalem Council's Crucial Decision
In Galatians 2:3, Paul highlights a pivotal moment. He brought Titus, a Gentile convert and fellow worker, to Jerusalem. The question wasn't just about traditions; it was about whether the good news of Jesus applied to everyone, regardless of their background.
No Compulsion for Titus

Paul had previously circumcised Timothy, who had a Jewish mother. Why the difference? It all came down to the reason behind the action and who was pressuring for it.
Principle vs. Pragmatism
This verse, along with the surrounding context, shows a nuanced approach to outward practices.

The Key Distinction
The difference lies in the intent and the source of pressure. When circumcision was presented as an obligation for Gentiles, Paul resisted fiercely. When it could be seen as a concession to help Jewish ears hear the gospel, he might allow it (as with Timothy).

The mention of Titus, an uncircumcised Greek, not being compelled to undergo circumcision at the Jerusalem Council highlights a crucial victory for the freedom of Gentile believers. It stands in contrast to Timothy's circumcision, showing Paul's strategic approach: he resisted compulsion for principle's sake but allowed accommodation for practical ministry.
