Paul didn't just present his gospel; he "laid it out" for examination, indicating that his apostleship and teaching were already established and confirmed by God, not something seeking validation from humans. He sought a private audience with the influential leaders specifically to ensure their understanding and thus prevent future misunderstandings that could undermine his vital work among the Gentiles.
I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul traveled to Jerusalem, guided by a divine revelation, not to receive instruction but to present the gospel he preached to Gentiles to the church's leaders. He met privately with those considered influential to ensure their understanding and approval, seeking to confirm that his ministry and the fruit it bore were not in vain. This step was crucial because any perceived disagreement between his message and the apostolic message in Jerusalem could undermine his work among the Gentiles.
Paul didn't just decide to visit Jerusalem; he went because God told him to. But why was this divine instruction so important for his gospel?
Paul emphasizes that his trip to Jerusalem was 'by revelation.' This wasn't just a casual visit or a request from the church in Antioch (though that also happened, as described in Acts 15). This divine direction from God underscored the importance of the mission and affirmed that Paul was acting on God's authority, not his own.
Why the emphasis on revelation?
Paul met privately with the 'leaders' or those 'of reputation.' Was this a sign of insecurity, or a strategic move to protect the gospel?
Paul explains he 'communicated' the gospel to them 'privately before those who seemed influential.' This wasn't about hiding the gospel or admitting doubt. Instead, it was a wise and strategic action:
Ask a follow-up
This wasn't about seeking approval for his gospel but about establishing a united front and clear understanding to safeguard the gospel's progress.
Paul feared his ministry might be 'in vain.' What was at stake, and how did this meeting protect the very essence of the gospel?
Paul's ultimate concern was that his ministry might be rendered ineffective, that his 'running' would be 'in vain.' This wasn't a fear of personal failure but a deep concern for the integrity and impact of the gospel itself.
What was at stake?
By meeting privately with the leaders, Paul sought to ensure that the gospel he preached – centered on faith and grace – would be recognized and upheld, thus safeguarding its power to save and transform lives.

Paul's visit to Jerusalem wasn't to receive his gospel from the apostles, but to ensure his ministry, which he received directly from God, was understood and affirmed by the Jerusalem leadership. This validation was crucial to prevent his life's work from being undermined by those who insisted on Jewish legalism for Gentile believers.

Paul, now accompanied by Silas, traveled through Asia Minor and into Greece, strengthening churches and facing opposition, but also experiencing significant success in cities like Corinth and Philippi.
This passage describes the very council Paul is referencing, showing the external reason for the Jerusalem visit (appointment by the Antioch church) which complements Paul's mention of his personal revelation.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27Paul uses the metaphor of running a race here, similar to Galatians 2:2, emphasizing the discipline and effort required to attain the prize of the gospel, reinforcing the idea that his work could be 'in vain'.
This section deals extensively with differences in practice among believers (like circumcision), highlighting the need for mutual acceptance and avoiding causing others to stumble, a theme underlying Paul's concern in Galatians 2:2.
Paul states here that the gospel he preaches was received directly through revelation from Jesus Christ, which supports his claim in Galatians 2:2 that he went to Jerusalem 'by revelation'.
Philippians 2:16Paul urges believers to 'hold fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may rejoice that I did not run in vain or labor in vain,' directly echoing his concern in Galatians 2:2 about the potential futility of his efforts.
