Paul immediately highlights his independent path, emphasizing that he didn't seek out the established apostles in Jerusalem. Instead, he went away to Arabia, deliberately choosing a direction opposite to the center of Jewish Christianity, to first process his new reality directly with God. This journey underscores his claim that his apostleship wasn't derived from human authority but from a divine encounter.
nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is explaining his apostolic authority, asserting that he received his commission directly from God, not from the apostles who were already established. To prove this, he describes his movements immediately after his conversion: instead of seeking out the Jerusalem apostles, he went into Arabia, then returned to Damascus, emphasizing his independence and direct divine calling.
Did Paul need the apostles' 'OK' after his conversion? He says absolutely not! Discover why he took a detour into Arabia instead of heading straight to Jerusalem.
Paul's letter to the Galatians is a passionate defense of his apostleship. He stresses that his authority didn't come from the original apostles in Jerusalem but directly from God through Christ.
A Radical Detour
Instead of seeking out the apostles in Jerusalem after his conversion, Paul states he went 'into Arabia.' This wasn't a short trip; it was a significant period (likely around three years) of isolation and preparation. Think of it as a spiritual wilderness experience, away from any human influence.

Neither went I up to Jerusalem - That is, I did not go there at once. I did not go to consult with the apostles there, or to be instructed by them in regard to the nature of the Christian religion. The design of this statement is to show that, in no sense, did he derive his commission from man. To them which were apostles before me - This implies that…

Neither went I up to Jerusalem,.... That is, immediately, as soon as he was converted, not till three years after, as follows; though by the account which Luke gives of him, Acts 9:23 and by that which the apostle gives of himself, Acts 22:17 it looks as if he went to Jerusalem some little time after his conversion, and before the date here given: and…
