The verse calls God's past favor a "little space," highlighting how quickly the people returned to their sin. This isn't just about a short time, but about the immense mercy God extended in allowing even a small remnant to return and establish themselves, a fragile hold that was easily jeopardized. It’s a profound acknowledgment that their very survival and a glimmer of hope were entirely dependent on God's continued grace, not their own faithfulness.
But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant and to give us a secure hold within his holy place, that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ezra is confessing the sin of intermarriage with surrounding nations, a sin that threatens to unravel the very identity of God's people. He acknowledges God's past mercies in allowing a remnant to return from exile and re-establish themselves in the promised land, but this grace has been met with renewed disobedience. Ezra fears this will bring further judgment, so he pleads for understanding and repentance before God’s people are completely lost.
Ezra calls their current situation a 'little space.' What does this brief moment mean when you compare it to the vast sweep of Israel's history?
The phrase 'for a little space' highlights that the return from exile and re-establishment in Jerusalem was a short period relative to Israel's long history of both disobedience and God's faithfulness.
A Fleeting Moment?
What does Ezra mean by God giving them a 'nail' in His holy place? It's a powerful metaphor for security and belonging.
The image of a 'nail' refers to a secure, firm establishment. After the trauma of exile, God granted the returning remnant a place to anchor themselves.
