and say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD! Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains and the hills, to the ravines and the valleys: Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you, and I will destroy your high places.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Ezekiel is commanded to address the land of Israel itself—its mountains, hills, ravines, and valleys—as a proxy for its inhabitants. This follows a prophecy against Egypt and precedes a judgment on Mount Seir, framing a larger message of God's sovereignty and judgment. The physical landscape is personified to hear God's word because the people have become deaf to His warnings, continuing their idolatrous practices in these very places despite the exile of their northern neighbors.
Why does God address mountains and valleys like they're people? It’s a powerful way to show how deeply sin pollutes everything, even the natural world.
In Ezekiel 6:3, God commands the prophet to speak not just to the people of Israel, but to the very landscape they inhabit: 'mountains,' 'hills,' 'ravines,' and 'valleys.' This isn't just poetic language. The land itself had become a participant in Israel's sin through idolatry. These places, often chosen for their natural beauty or perceived sacredness, were desecrated by worship of false gods. By speaking directly to the mountains and valleys, God emphasizes that His judgment is so comprehensive it will impact the physical environment where sin took root. It's a stark reminder that God sees and holds accountable every aspect of His creation when it's misused for rebellion against Him.
God promises to bring a 'sword' and destroy 'high places.' What exactly does this mean for the people and their worship?
The 'sword' in this context signifies a devastating military invasion and conquest, bringing death and destruction upon the people who inhabited these sacred but corrupted sites. The phrase 'your high places' refers specifically to the altars and sanctuaries where the Israelites (and earlier Canaanites) conducted their idolatrous worship. These weren't just simple shrines; they were central to a religious system that God deemed an 'abomination.' God's judgment isn't merely about punishing sinful actions, but about eradicating the very structures and symbols of rebellion. He is dismantling the false worship, promising that these places, elevated for their perceived connection to deities, will be utterly destroyed, signifying the end of that illicit religious practice.

The verse repeats 'I, even I...' Why this emphasis? It’s God reminding everyone that He is the ultimate source of this judgment.
The emphatic repetition, 'Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you,' is crucial. In a world where nations battled and armies clashed, it would be easy for the Israelites to see their destruction as merely the work of human enemies, like the Babylonians. But God wants to make it unequivocally clear: He is the one orchestrating this judgment. The sword is His instrument. This isn't a random act of fate or the triumph of another god; it is the sovereign Lord of all executing His justice. This emphasis serves to underscore His authority and the seriousness of His covenant with Israel. Disobedience had profound consequences directly linked to God's own action.
