The verse describes three distinct fates for the people: destruction by fire within the city, slaughter by the sword around it, and scattering to the wind. Yet, the chilling detail is that even those scattered, those who seem to escape immediate disaster, will be pursued by God's "drawn out sword," showing that no one is truly beyond His reach or judgment.
A third part you shall burn in the fire in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are completed. And a third part you shall take and strike with the sword all around the city. And a third part you shall scatter to the wind, and I will unsheathe the sword after them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This is part of a dramatic, symbolic act where Ezekiel is commanded to shave his head and beard, then divide the hair into three portions to represent the fate of Jerusalem's inhabitants. The hair burned, struck by the sword, and scattered to the wind signifies the different ways God’s judgment would fall: destruction within the city during the siege, death by the sword during attempts to escape or after capture, and dispersal into exile where God's vengeance would still follow them.
Why would God command such a drastic and symbolic act? Ezekiel's prophetic haircut wasn't just for show; it was a stark picture of complete destruction.
In Ezekiel 5:2, God instructs Ezekiel to divide his hair into three equal parts. Each part represents a different, yet equally devastating, fate for the people of Jerusalem:
Burned in the city (fire): This symbolizes those who would perish within Jerusalem's walls from famine, pestilence, or the fires that consumed the city during the siege. It's the internal destruction, the suffering that happened inside the city.
Smitten by the sword: This represents those killed during the violent assaults on the city or those trying to escape. It’s the direct, brutal slaughter that happened in the chaos of war, both inside and just outside the city limits.
Scattered to the wind: This signifies the survivors who would be dispersed into exile in foreign lands. Though they escaped the immediate destruction, God declares His sword would still pursue them, meaning their exile wouldn't guarantee safety.
You might think escaping to another land offers safety. But God's message here is chilling: His judgment follows, relentlessly.

The scattering of the people to the wind in Ezekiel 5:2 isn't an endpoint of judgment, but a phase. God’s declaration, 'and I will unsheathe the sword after them,' is crucial. It means:
Judgment isn't confined: God's justice isn't limited by city walls or national borders. Even in exile, the consequences of their sin would follow them.
Divine Pursuit: The imagery of drawing a sword signifies that God Himself would actively pursue them with punishment, whether through further enslavement, hardship, or the eventual conquest of the lands they fled to.
Ultimate Accountability: No matter where they ran, they could not outrun God’s authority or the consequences of their actions. Their dispersion was not an escape, but an extension of their judgment.
God often uses vivid, even strange, actions to get our attention. Ezekiel's hair wasn't just hair; it was a dramatic prophecy with real-world impact.
The actions Ezekiel performs in Ezekiel 5:2 are not literal acts of violence upon his own body, but a symbolic prophecy carried out in a visionary way or through symbolic actions (as clarified in verses like Ezekiel 4:1). The commentators point out:
The Tile and the Hair: The destruction described relates to the symbolic siege represented on the tile (Ezekiel 4:1) and the symbolic shaving of Ezekiel’s head and beard (Ezekiel 5:1-2), signifying the complete devastation of Jerusalem and its people.
Prophetic Theater: Ezekiel’s actions served as a visual sermon. By dividing and destroying the hair in these ways, he was acting out the fate of Jerusalem for all to see, making the abstract concept of judgment tangible.
Fulfilling God's Word: While the prophet’s actions were symbolic, the outcome they represented was terrifyingly real. The people faced famine, sword, and exile, fulfilling God’s pronouncements. The symbolism highlighted the totality and certainty of the coming destruction.
This vivid symbolic act by Ezekiel dramatically illustrates the totality of God's judgment on Jerusalem, showing that destruction would come through siege, sword, and scattering, leaving no one truly safe.
