Ezekiel 47:15-20

What does Ezekiel 47:15-20 mean?

What's striking here is that Ezekiel's description of the northern border starts with the Mediterranean Sea and heads inland, a reversal from the way the land was initially described when Israel came up from Egypt. This shift points to a future restoration, where the promise of land is being reimagined for those returning from exile.

“This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, and on to Zedad, Berothah, Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. So the boundary shall run from the sea to Hazar-enan, which is on the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This shall be the north side. “On the east side, the boundary shall run between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; to the eastern sea and as far as Tamar. This shall be the east side. “On the south side, it shall run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt to the Great Sea. This shall be the south side. “On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.

What Ezekiel 47:15-20 means

Ezekiel is describing the future, restored land of Israel, a vision filled with hope for a people who had experienced exile and devastation. Following the depiction of a life-giving river flowing from God's presence, the text now turns to delineating the boundaries of this renewed territory. These borders are presented from north to south, reflecting a return from Babylonian captivity, and are strikingly similar to the boundaries established in the book of Numbers.

A Fresh Start from a Familiar Place

Ever felt like you were starting over? Ezekiel's vision redraws boundaries, but it's not entirely new territory. This boundary description has roots in the past.

Ezekiel is describing the ideal, future boundaries of God's people, but he grounds it in real geography. Notice how the description starts from the 'Great Sea' (the Mediterranean). This isn't just a random point; it's the western edge of the Promised Land as they knew it.

Interestingly, the order is reversed from how they first entered the land from Egypt (described in Numbers 34, starting from the south). Here, the vision begins from the north. This might reflect their situation as exiles in Babylon, looking towards home, or perhaps it signifies the spread of God's kingdom from the north, as some commentators suggest.

The specific place names like Hethlon and Zedad are difficult to pinpoint today, but their purpose is clear: to define a clear, expansive territory. It shows that God's promises are specific, even when the details are ancient.

Beyond the Known: God's Expansive Promise

The names Hethlon and Zedad might be mysteries today, but they point to a significant truth about the land God intended for His people.

While the specific locations of Hethlon and Zedad are debated among scholars, their inclusion in the boundary description is crucial. They weren't necessarily key cities in the historical Israelite territories.

This suggests that Ezekiel's vision isn't just about reclaiming old territory, but about an expanded inheritance. The references to places like Hamath (mentioned in some commentaries as being near Zedad or the 'entering of Hamath') were significant northern points that historically were part of Israel's full possession.
