Ezekiel 47:13-20

What does Ezekiel 47:13-20 mean?

The verse specifies the land will be divided among the "twelve tribes of Israel," but it's striking that Joseph gets two portions. This isn't just about splitting Joseph's inheritance between his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh; it's God reasserting a double blessing on Joseph, fulfilling Jacob's earlier prophetic words and ensuring that even with twelve tribes receiving land, Joseph's legacy receives a unique prominence.

Thus says the Lord GOD: “This is the boundary by which you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph shall have two portions. And you shall divide equally what I swore to give to your fathers. This land shall fall to you as your inheritance. “This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, and on to Zedad, Berothah, Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. So the boundary shall run from the sea to Hazar-enan, which is on the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This shall be the north side. “On the east side, the boundary shall run between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; to the eastern sea and as far as Tamar. This shall be the east side. “On the south side, it shall run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt to the Great Sea. This shall be the south side. “On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.

What Ezekiel 47:13-20 means

Ezekiel is describing a new, idealized division of the land of Israel for the returning exiles, continuing the vision from the previous chapter. This section lays out the specific boundaries of this future inheritance. It's important to note that Joseph's tribe is given two portions, reflecting their importance and historical inheritance from Jacob.

The Twelve Tribes and Their Inheritance

Why does Ezekiel mention twelve tribes when, historically, only Judah and Benjamin returned from exile after the Babylonian captivity? This vision promises a restoration for all of Israel.

A New Beginning for All Israel

This passage lays out the boundaries for inheriting the land, explicitly stating it's for the "twelve tribes of Israel." This is a powerful promise, especially considering the division of the kingdom and the exile of the northern tribes (which were often referred to collectively as "Joseph").

Even though only some descendants of Judah and Benjamin returned to the land after Babylon, God's vision here looks to a future restoration where all twelve tribes will receive their inheritance. It's a sign of God's faithfulness to His covenant people, not just a remnant.

Joseph's Double Portion: Birthright and Blessing

Joseph's tribe gets a special mention with "two portions." What's the deep significance behind this double inheritance?

Honoring Jacob's Legacy

The special mention of Joseph receiving "two portions" isn't arbitrary. It directly references Jacob's (Israel's) blessing of Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, in Genesis 48. Jacob adopted them as his own sons, effectively giving Joseph the inheritance rights of a firstborn son, which included a double share.

This double portion for Joseph's lineage (Ephraim and Manasseh) in Ezekiel's vision acknowledges this unique status, established by Jacob and rooted in Joseph's faithfulness. It also subtly accounts for the Levites, who, while tribal, received a different kind of inheritance (land set aside for them and their cities) rather than a specific geographical portion like the other tribes.
