Though the vision describes water flowing from the temple, it's crucial to notice it originates beneath the threshold, not from a visible altar or cistern. This hints that the source of God's blessing isn't external or ritualistic, but springs from the very heart of His presence, a deep, hidden wellspring flowing outwards.
Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After exploring the detailed measurements and layout of the restored temple, Ezekiel is brought back to its entrance. Here, he witnesses a miraculous sight: water begins to flow from beneath the temple's threshold, moving eastward. This unexpected stream, originating near the altar, marks the beginning of a vision that will reveal the abundant blessings flowing from God's presence.
Imagine seeing water unexpectedly burst forth from beneath the most sacred spot in Jerusalem. What does this unusual sight signify?
Ezekiel is brought back to the very threshold of the Temple, the place where God's presence dwelled. From this holy place, water begins to flow eastward. This isn't just any water; it's presented as a mystical fountain, not a typical plumbing system. While there were practical water systems for the Temple's rituals, this vision points to something far deeper. The commentators suggest this is not literal water but a symbol.
A Source of Life
This vision isn't static; the water changes as it flows. What does this transformation tell us about God's work?
As Ezekiel follows the water, he sees it deepen significantly. Starting as a small rill, it becomes a river that is eventually unfordable. This progression is key to understanding the impact of God's presence and His blessings.
