Ezekiel 39:11-16

What does Ezekiel 39:11-16 mean?

The seemingly straightforward description of a valley of graves actually contains a clever wordplay on "passengers" (travelers) and "passing." This valley, meant to be a thoroughfare, will become so blocked by the sheer number of Gog's fallen soldiers that actual travelers will be obstructed, and later, the land itself will need "passers" to clear the bones, highlighting the immense scale of the destruction.

“On that day I will give to Gog a place for burial in Israel, the Valley of the Travelers, east of the sea. It will block the travelers, for there Gog and all his multitude will be buried. It will be called the Valley of Hamon-gog. For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order to cleanse the land. All the people of the land will bury them, and it will bring them renown on the day that I show my glory, declares the Lord GOD. They will set apart men to travel through the land regularly and bury those travelers remaining on the face of the land, so as to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make their search. And when these travel through the land and anyone sees a human bone, then he shall set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon-gog. (Hamonah is also the name of the city.) Thus shall they cleanse the land.

What Ezekiel 39:11-16 means

This passage describes the aftermath of a catastrophic battle where the invading army led by "Gog" is utterly defeated by God. The text reveals that the sheer number of slain enemies will be so immense that a specific valley, known as the "Valley of the Travelers" east of a sea (likely the Dead Sea), will be completely filled with their bodies, effectively blocking the usual routes for travelers and even causing a foul stench. This mass burial site will then be renamed the "Valley of Hamon-gog," meaning "Valley of Gog's Multitude," serving as a permanent reminder of God's judgment.

A Highway of Judgment

Imagine a busy road, bustling with merchants and travelers. Suddenly, it's completely unusable. That's the scene here.

Ezekiel describes a specific location: 'the Valley of the Travelers, east of the sea.' This wasn't just any place; it was a significant route, likely a major highway used by traders moving between regions like Syria and Egypt. The name itself, 'Valley of the Travelers,' points to its regular use.

But in this future event, this once-busy thoroughfare becomes a monument to God's judgment. The sheer number of Gog's defeated army, buried there, will 'block the travelers.' This signifies not only a physical obstruction but a profound interruption of the enemy's plans and the cessation of their 'travels' through the land. What was a path for commerce becomes a final resting place for conquest.

The location 'east of the sea' likely refers to the Dead Sea region, a place already associated with God's judgment on sin (Sodom and Gomorrah). Placing Gog’s defeat and burial here underscores the connection between ancient and future divine wrath against wicked nations.

The Lingering Stench of Defeat

What does a battlefield smell like? Ezekiel doesn't hold back in describing the foul aftermath of Gog's destruction.

The verse states that the burial of Gog and his multitude 'will stop the noses of the passengers.' This phrase carries a powerful sensory impact.

While some scholars debate whether it implies a literal stench from decaying bodies or a metaphorical 'stopping' of their journey due to the sheer horror and obstruction, the effect is the same: it's a potent sign of judgment. The overwhelming presence of the enemy's dead will make the area offensive and impassable.
