The verse emphasizes that God’s action of vindicating His name isn't just for the nations' benefit, but starts with Him being “sanctified in you” – meaning He must first be honored and recognized as holy by His own people. This internal re-sanctification within Israel is the crucial, often-missed precursor that then allows the nations to see and acknowledge His holiness.
And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God declares He will act to prove His holiness, which the Israelites had disgraced among foreign nations through their sin and subsequent exile. This divine intervention will not be primarily for Israel's sake, but to restore the reputation of His own name, so that the surrounding nations will recognize His supreme power and authority as they witness His restoration of His people.
Have you ever felt embarrassed by someone else's actions, like their behavior reflected poorly on you? That's exactly how God felt about His name.
Ezekiel's message comes at a low point for Israel. They've been exiled, scattered among the nations, and their God seems weak or absent. The surrounding peoples have taken notice, mocking God and assuming He's no match for their own gods.
God doesn't just leave His name disgraced. He has a powerful plan to set the record straight, and it involves a surprising turn of events.
The core of Ezekiel 36:23 is God's promise to actively vindicate His name. This isn't passive; it's a divine intervention that will showcase His holiness and power.

The verse hints at a crucial connection: God's external actions (restoration) are tied to internal transformation. While the verse emphasizes the nations seeing God's holiness, it's the internal sanctification of His people that makes this possible.
