Ezekiel 36:12-15

What does Ezekiel 36:12-15 mean?

The verse flips a devastating reality: instead of the land being a place of loss and death, it will be a source of life and inheritance. What's remarkable is that the land itself is personified as the one who will "no longer bereave," signifying a complete reversal where it becomes a sanctuary that nurtures, rather than destroys, its people.

I will let people walk on you, even my people Israel. And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no longer bereave them of children. Thus says the Lord GOD: Because they say to you, ‘You devour people, and you bereave your nation of children,’ therefore you shall no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Lord GOD. And I will not let you hear anymore the reproach of the nations, and you shall no longer bear the disgrace of the peoples and no longer cause your nation to stumble, declares the Lord GOD.”

What Ezekiel 36:12-15 means

In the preceding verses, God has declared his fierce anger against the surrounding nations who have gloated over Israel's destruction and claimed the land for themselves. Now, turning his attention back to the land itself, God promises its restoration and reoccupation, not by enemies, but by his own people, Israel. This assurance is a stark contrast to the desolate state the land has endured, assuring it will no longer be a place of death and loss for its rightful inhabitants.

The Land Restored to Its People

Imagine a land ravaged, empty, and dangerous, where wild beasts roam instead of people. Ezekiel 36:12 paints a stark picture of desolation, but then flips it with an incredible promise. What does it mean for a land to be 'bereft' and how does God reverse that?

In Ezekiel's time, the land of Israel had become a desolate place, a shadow of its former glory. The phrase 'bereave them of men' originally referred to the loss of children, but here it's expanded to mean the land itself was causing a deep loss to the people – they were deprived of their inhabitants, their homes, and their security. Wild animals had taken over, a stark sign of God's judgment.

But God declares a reversal: 'I will cause men to walk upon you.' This isn't just about people passing through; it signifies a return to inhabitation and ownership. 'My people Israel' will walk there, not as fearful visitors, but as rightful owners. They will 'possess' the land, and it will be their 'inheritance' once more. This is a powerful picture of restoration, where a place of loss and emptiness becomes a place of belonging and security.

Inheritance: More Than Just Land

The word 'inheritance' often makes us think of property or money. But in Ezekiel's promise, 'inheritance' carries a weightier, more profound meaning tied to identity and God's covenant faithfulness. What's the deeper significance here?

When God says Israel will 'possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance,' He's speaking on multiple levels.

1. The Land as a Gift: The land of Canaan was promised to Abraham and his descendants. It was a physical manifestation of God's covenant promises to them, a place where they could live as His people. Possessing it was a sign of God's faithfulness and blessing.
