God promises to "do more good to you than ever before," hinting that the restoration will surpass even the glorious beginnings of Israel's history, pointing towards a future blessing far greater than mere temporal restoration. This emphasis on exceeding former glories suggests a spiritual fulfillment that dwarfs earthly prosperity.
And I will multiply on you man and beast, and they shall multiply and be fruitful. And I will cause you to be inhabited as in your former times, and will do more good to you than ever before. Then you will know that I am the LORD. I will let people walk on you, even my people Israel. And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no longer bereave them of children.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage follows God's declaration of judgment against the surrounding nations who have reveled in Israel's destruction. Now, turning to the land itself, God promises a powerful restoration, not just to its former state, but even better. He will repopulate it with people and animals, bringing fruitfulness and prosperity, causing it to flourish beyond its earliest days.
When God restores, it’s not just about going back to how things were. It's about a new, even better reality.
Ezekiel 36:11 promises not only a return to their former state but an abundance that surpasses it. The phrase 'do more good to you than ever before' is key here. Think of it like a comeback story, but with an incredible upgrade.
A Higher Standard
Commentators note that this promise goes beyond a simple physical restoration after the Babylonian exile. While there was a partial fulfillment then, the language points to something grander. It's about God's capacity to not just fix what's broken, but to build something far richer and more enduring.
This 'better' isn't just about more land or more stuff. It points to a superior quality of life and blessing, hinting at the spiritual richness to come.
What's the ultimate goal of God's overwhelming generosity? It's not just about comfort, but about connection.
The verse culminates with a profound declaration: 'Then you will know that I am the LORD.' This isn't just a casual acquaintance; it's a deep, experiential knowledge of God's character and power.
Experiential Knowledge
The multiplication of people and beasts, the resettlement, and the surpassing goodness are all means to an end. God is demonstrating His faithfulness, His power, and His love in such tangible ways that His people will be left with no doubt about who He is.
This abundance serves to reveal God's identity and His unwavering commitment to His covenant. It’s an invitation to a relationship built on recognizing His divine hand at work.
