Have you ever noticed how people can gather to talk about important things, yet have no intention of actually doing them? Ezekiel's people were masters of this.
The people of Judah in exile were gathering around Ezekiel, talking about his messages from the Lord. They met 'by the walls and at the doors of the houses,' common gathering spots for casual conversation and the sharing of news.
A Surface-Level Interest
They would even invite each other, saying, 'Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD.' This sounds promising, doesn't it? It suggests an eagerness to hear God's message. However, the context reveals a critical issue:
- Curiosity, Not Commitment: They came not for life change, but for entertainment or intellectual stimulation. They were 'hearers' rather than 'doers' of the word.
- Distant Hearts: While their mouths spoke of God's word, their hearts were far from Him, still holding onto their sins and desires.
