The ultimate consequence of these actions is 'fear in the land of Egypt.' Is God simply trying to scare people, or is there a deeper purpose?
The Fear of the Lord vs. Fear of Man
The prophecy culminates with God declaring, 'so I will put fear in the land of Egypt.' This 'fear' is multifaceted, encompassing the terror of invasion and conquest, but also pointing towards a deeper spiritual reality.
- The Terror of Judgment: The destruction of idols and the collapse of leadership would understandably bring widespread panic and consternation among the Egyptian people. They would fear the Babylonian armies that God was using as His instrument.
- Recognizing True Power: By demonstrating His power over their gods and rulers, God aimed to make the Egyptians (and surrounding nations) recognize His supreme authority. The fear instilled was meant to be a signpost pointing to the true God.
- A Path to Humility: True fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). For those who would listen, this divine judgment offered an opportunity to humble themselves before the Almighty, abandoning their false gods and misplaced confidence.
Ultimately, God's judgments, though terrifying to those experiencing them, serve His purposes to reveal His glory and draw people, even from the ashes of destruction, to Himself.
