Is 'toughness' about being loud and defiant, or something deeper? God clarifies the distinction for His messengers.
The 'hardness' God gives His prophets isn't about adopting the sinfulness of their audience, but about possessing a superior, God-given resolve.
The Difference is Key
The rebellious people are 'hard' in their defiance and impudence. God, however, gives Ezekiel a different kind of hardness: steadfastness, courage, and an unyielding commitment to the message.
A Supernatural Gift
This resilience is not a natural human trait that Ezekiel conjures up. It's a supernatural endowment from God. It means that no matter how boldly the people oppose him, Ezekiel will not be ashamed, he will not back down, and he will not be intimidated. His strength is greater because its source is divine.
