The command to "go out into the valley" isn't just about finding a quiet spot; it signifies withdrawing from the familiar community and its noise. God is preparing Ezekiel for a deeper, more intimate communication of His will, away from the crowd where the vision will have "sufficient room to manifest itself."
And the hand of the LORD was upon me there. And he said to me, “Arise, go out into the valley, and there I will speak with you.” So I arose and went out into the valley, and behold, the glory of the LORD stood there, like the glory that I had seen by the Chebar canal, and I fell on my face.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After a week of silent contemplation following his commissioning, Ezekiel is again powerfully moved by God's presence, indicated by the "hand of the LORD" upon him. He's instructed to leave the community at Tel-abib and go to a secluded place in the valley or plain to receive further communication, preparing him for a shift in his ministry from public proclamation to a more symbolic, withdrawn form of instruction. This leads into a series of symbolic actions that will represent Jerusalem's impending doom.
Ever feel a 'push' to do something difficult, a sense of being divinely nudged? Ezekiel experienced this powerfully.
The phrase 'the hand of the LORD was upon me' signals more than just a feeling. It's a tangible, powerful divine influence that compels Ezekiel to act. This isn't a gentle suggestion; it's a supernatural enablement that moves him from a state of being overwhelmed and burdened by his message to the next step God has for him.
God didn't send Ezekiel back into the crowd. He called him to be alone. Why seek solitude for divine communication?
God's command, 'Arise, go out into the plain (or valley), and there I will speak with you,' is a call to a specific kind of space – one removed from the noise and distractions of human society.
