This verse reveals a dramatic shift: the prophet isn't just seeing God's glory anymore, but is being physically moved by the Spirit, hearing a powerful, earth-shattering declaration of praise behind him. It's not just a voice, but a "great rushing," hinting at the immense power accompanying God's presence and the proclamation that His glory is eternally blessed, no matter where it is manifested.
Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great earthquake: “Blessed be the glory of the LORD from its place!” It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures as they touched one another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, and the sound of a great earthquake. The Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the hand of the LORD being strong upon me.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Having just received his commission and heard the word of the Lord, Ezekiel is physically lifted by the Spirit. He's not just being moved to a new location but is being prepared for the next stage of his prophetic mission, hearing a powerful, awe-inspiring acclaim of God's glory from the divine chariot. This acclamation underscores the immense holiness and majesty of the God who sends him, even as He seems to depart from His place.
Ezekiel is 'lifted up' by the Spirit. Was this a dream, or something more tangible?
The text emphasizes that the Spirit of God directly acted upon Ezekiel, transporting him. While visions are central to his prophecy, this moment goes beyond a mere internal experience. It’s described as a physical, real-time movement, much like how the Spirit caught Philip in the New Testament.
A Divine Transport
This physical relocation underscores the reality of God's call and the tangible nature of His presence, even amidst profound spiritual experiences.
Ezekiel hears a 'great rushing' sound. What does this immense noise represent?
The 'great rushing' isn't just random noise; it's the sound of God's majestic presence on His divine chariot, as previously revealed to Ezekiel. It’s the thundering announcement of His glory.
