Ever felt let down by someone you were counting on? The people of Egypt became a symbol of that very disappointment for Israel.
God declares through Ezekiel that Egypt will know He is LORD because of their faithlessness.
A Reed That Breaks
The imagery of a "staff of reed" is incredibly powerful. Reeds grew abundantly in Egypt, a natural product of the Nile. When you lean on a reed as a staff, it's designed to support you, but a reed is weak. It bends, it breaks, and can even cause further injury, like splinters.
This is exactly how Egypt acted towards Israel. Israel, in its desperation, looked to Egypt for military aid and alliance. But Egypt's promises were hollow. They offered a show of support, but ultimately failed to deliver, leaving Israel vulnerable and deceived when Nebuchadnezzar's forces attacked.
God's Judgment for Treachery
While God also rebuked Israel for their misplaced trust, He didn't let Egypt off the hook. Their treachery and broken promises were a grave offense. God's judgment was coming not just for Egypt's pride, but specifically for their role in deceiving and ultimately harming His people.
