Ezekiel 29:4-5

God's judgment isn't just about crushing Egypt; it's about revealing their false strength and dependence. The "hooks" and "fish sticking to scales" show that even Egypt's power and its people, intended to be its strength, become instruments of its downfall and are dragged down with it.
I will put hooks in your jaws, and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales; and I will draw you up out of the midst of your streams, with all the fish of your streams that stick to your scales. And I will cast you out into the wilderness, you and all the fish of your streams; you shall fall on the open field, and not be brought together or gathered. To the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the heavens I give you as food.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ezekiel is pronouncing judgment on Egypt, specifically personified as a mighty crocodile in the Nile. This declaration follows God's assertion of judgment against Egypt and the prophecy of its desolation. The verses describe how God will hook this proud "dragon" and drag it from its waters, symbolizing a humiliating defeat and its eventual downfall.
Pharaoh, ruler of Egypt, is compared to a fearsome creature of the Nile. But who truly holds the power?
The Lord's Sovereign Hand
Ezekiel paints a vivid picture: God is going to put hooks in the jaws of Egypt's ruler, depicted as a massive, scaly creature of the river (like a crocodile). This isn't just a threat; it's a declaration of absolute control.
Think about it: a 'hook' is a tool used to capture and control something powerful and dangerous. God is saying that even this mighty king, who sees himself as invincible, is ultimately subject to His authority. He is the fisherman, and Pharaoh is the fish caught on the line.
This imagery reminds us that no earthly power, no matter how grand or intimidating, is beyond God's reach. He can orchestrate events and raise up enemies to bring even the proudest down.
Pharaoh's downfall isn't solitary; his own people become ensnared in his fate. What does this say about leadership and consequence?
A Shared Calamity
The prophecy continues: not only will Pharaoh be pulled out of the water, but 'all the fish of your streams' will stick to his scales. This is a powerful metaphor for how those close to a leader, whether advisors, the army, or the general populace, can become entangled in their leader's disastrous decisions.
In ancient times, a crocodile might have small fish or debris clinging to its tough scales. When the crocodile is hauled out, everything attached to it comes too. Similarly, Pharaoh's pride and his ambitious, ill-fated ventures will drag his entire nation into ruin.
