Ezekiel 29:18-20

What does Ezekiel 29:18-20 mean?

This verse isn't just about a tough military campaign; it highlights how Nebuchadnezzar's immense labor and suffering in the thirteen-year siege of Tyre were ultimately without personal reward. The prophecy emphasizes that despite the incredible hardship his army endured, they gained no spoils, revealing God's sovereign hand in using even conquering kings for His purposes, often without them realizing the true "wages" they might be earning for Him.

“Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare, yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had performed against her. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he shall carry off its wealth and despoil it and plunder it; and it shall be the wages for his army. I have given him the land of Egypt as his payment for which he labored, because they worked for me, declares the Lord GOD.

What Ezekiel 29:18-20 means

Nebuchadnezzar's army endured a grueling thirteen-year siege against the island city of Tyre, a testament to their immense labor. Despite the extreme hardship—heads made bald from helmets and shoulders rubbed raw from carrying materials—Nebuchadnezzar and his soldiers gained virtually no spoil or reward from their efforts. This lack of compensation highlights the Tyrians' cleverness in moving their wealth to other locations before the city's eventual fall.

The Cost of Determined Ambition

Imagine pouring thirteen years of your life into a single goal, enduring immense hardship. That was Nebuchadnezzar's pursuit of Tyre. What does this tell us about human ambition?

Ezekiel 29:18 paints a stark picture of King Nebuchadnezzar's grueling siege of Tyre. The text emphasizes the sheer physical toll on his army: 'Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare.' This wasn't just about warfare; it was about relentless, back-breaking labor. They built causeways, moved rubble, and endured the constant weight of armor and equipment.

Unseen Sacrifices

Scholars suggest this baldness and raw skin came from the intense effort of constructing siege works, possibly a mole or causeway to reach the island city. Their helmets and armor, constantly worn, chafed their heads and shoulders, while carrying heavy loads further damaged their skin.

This highlights how grand ambitions often come with unseen, profound sacrifices. The effort required can strip away more than just physical comfort; it can wear down the very spirit.

The Disappointment of Unmet Expectations

After thirteen years of intense effort, Nebuchadnezzar expected a rich reward. But the text says he got 'no wages.' What happens when our labor doesn't yield the expected return?

The frustrating punchline of this lengthy siege is stated plainly: 'yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had performed against her.' Despite conquering the city, the spoil was minimal.
