What's striking here is that the Philistines' "revenge" wasn't just about a specific incident; it was driven by an "old hatred" and executed with a "malice of soul." This tells us their violence wasn't just reactive, but rooted in a deep-seated, ongoing animosity that fueled their desire for complete destruction.
“Thus says the Lord GOD: Because the Philistines acted revengefully and took vengeance with malice of soul to destroy in never-ending enmity, therefore thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I will stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the rest of the seacoast.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of a larger prophetic oracle in Ezekiel detailing God's judgment against various nations surrounding Israel. Ezekiel has just delivered pronouncements against the Ammonites, Moabites, and Edomites, and now turns his attention to the Philistines, who, like their neighbors, harbored ancient and bitter animosity toward God's people. The Philistines are condemned not just for their actions, but for the deep-seated malice and "never-ending enmity" driving their vengeful spirit.

An Ancient, Stubborn Enmity
