The Lord says, "Also the word of the LORD came to me." This seemingly simple phrase highlights a profound shift: it marks the beginning of a new, deeply personal divine message that breaks from the previous prophetic pronouncements. It signals that the impending instruction isn't just about symbolic visions, but about a devastating reality hitting Ezekiel's own life directly.
The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, behold, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you at a stroke; yet you shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run down. Sigh, but not aloud; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban, and put your shoes on your feet; do not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.” So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I was commanded.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Immediately after recounting the parable of the boiling pot and its interpretation, God's word comes to Ezekiel again, this time with a deeply personal and startling command. The Lord announces He will suddenly take away the wife Ezekiel dearly loves, the "delight of his eyes," and forbids him from showing any outward signs of grief. This intimate tragedy mirrors the impending national catastrophe, emphasizing that all personal comforts will be consumed by the greater devastation facing Jerusalem.
God’s message often comes to us in the midst of our own deepest experiences. For Ezekiel, the word of the Lord didn't just arrive; it landed with profound personal weight.
The Word Arrives
The phrase "the word of the LORD came to me" is a recurring signal in Ezekiel and other prophetic books. It announces that a divine message is about to be delivered. But in this instance, the message isn't just about the nation's impending doom; it directly impacts Ezekiel's own life.
A Beloved Wife's Death
Ezekiel is about to receive news of the sudden death of his wife, described as "the delight of your eyes." This wasn't a distant, abstract event. It was a deeply personal tragedy, hitting him with the force of a thunderbolt. The commentaries suggest this event was real, not just a symbolic vision, making the divine call a source of immense personal sorrow.
What do you do when tragedy strikes? For Ezekiel, the expected outpouring of grief was replaced by a divinely imposed stillness.
The Prophet's Unconventional Grief
Ezekiel is commanded not to mourn his wife's death in the customary ways. This meant no weeping, no wailing, no covering his head, and no bare feet – all outward signs of deep sorrow in that culture.
A Higher Purpose
Ask a follow-up
This restraint wasn't to numb Ezekiel's pain but to serve a greater purpose. By refraining from public displays of grief, Ezekiel would become a living sign to his people. His silent suffering mirrored the silent, devastating loss they would soon face when Jerusalem and its temple were destroyed. Their own expressions of sorrow would be swallowed by the overwhelming national catastrophe.
