Ezekiel 23:31-34

What does Ezekiel 23:31-34 mean?

The "cup" here is more than just a metaphor for punishment; it signifies a bitter draught of utter devastation that leaves one utterly disoriented, as if driven to madness by intoxication. This isn't just suffering, but a loss of sense and control, even to the point of self-inflicted harm, mirroring the complete spiritual and national ruin that results from forgetting God.

You have gone the way of your sister; therefore I will give her cup into your hand. Thus says the Lord GOD: “You shall drink your sister’s cup that is deep and large; you shall be laughed at and held in derision, for it contains much; you will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow. A cup of horror and desolation, the cup of your sister Samaria; you shall drink it and drain it out, and gnaw its shards, and tear your breasts; for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.

What Ezekiel 23:31-34 means

The prophet Ezekiel is denouncing the spiritual adultery of Jerusalem (named Aholibah) by comparing her to her sister Samaria (Aholah), who has already fallen due to her wicked ways. God declares that because Jerusalem has followed the same path of idolatry and sin, she will now share in the same severe judgment and punishment that befell Samaria. This judgment is metaphorically described as drinking a bitter "cup" of calamity, which will bring astonishment and desolation.

The Echo of Sinful Sisterhood

Ezekiel paints a stark picture of two sisters, but they aren't just family. They represent nations, and their shared sin leads to a shared, terrible fate.

In Ezekiel 23, the prophet uses the allegory of two sisters, Oholah (Samaria) and Oholibah (Jerusalem), to describe the spiritual adultery of Israel and Judah. They both turned away from God to chase after idols and foreign alliances. This verse, "You have gone the way of your sister," is God's direct accusation against Jerusalem (Oholibah) for mirroring Samaria's (Oholah's) deep sinfulness. It highlights how sin isn't isolated; it often follows familiar, destructive patterns, especially when a community or nation abandons its covenant with God.

Drinking the Cup of Wrath

The 'cup' in Scripture often signifies more than just a drink. It's a powerful symbol for the fullness of God's judgment.

The phrase 'therefore I will give her cup into your hand' is loaded with meaning. Throughout the Old Testament, a 'cup' is frequently used as a metaphor for God's righteous judgment and the punishment due for sin. This 'cup' was filled with the bitter dregs of calamity, astonishment, and desolation. Just as Samaria (Oholah) had already drunk this cup of judgment and faced destruction, Jerusalem (Oholibah) would now be forced to drink the same. It signifies a complete and inescapable portion of divine wrath, leaving no part of the punishment unexperienced.
