Imagine a city's defenses crumbling, leaving it wide open to attack. That's the picture God paints of Judah.
God uses two powerful images here: a 'hedge' and a 'gap'.
The Broken Hedge
A hedge was like a protective fence, surrounding and safeguarding a community. For Judah, this hedge represented God's protection and covenant faithfulness.
But the people's sin had broken it down. They were no longer living within God's protective boundaries.
The Open Gap
The 'gap' is the breach in that broken hedge. It's an open wound, a vulnerable spot where danger can rush in. God describes Himself as standing 'in the gap,' ready to judge the land because of its sin.
This imagery shows the severity of their situation. The defenses were down, and divine judgment was poised to enter.
