Ezekiel's scattered people wanted to blend in with other nations, to be 'like the nations.' God has a different plan. His gathering is not about assimilation, but about separation.
A Chosen Distinction
God is speaking to His people who are scattered among various nations. They had desired to be "like the nations" (Ezekiel 20:32), to abandon their distinct identity and worship the idols of their neighbors. But God declares, "I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries..."
This isn't just a physical relocation; it's a divine intervention to prevent them from fully blending in. He will pull them away, not to let them disappear into the crowd, but to set them apart. This action, described with a "mighty hand and an outstretched arm," mirrors the original Exodus. Just as God rescued Israel from Egypt, He will rescue them from the nations where they've become entangled. The purpose is to preserve their identity as His own, distinct people, preventing them from being lost among the idolatrous.
