Ezekiel 20:34-35

This isn't just about bringing Israel back, but about God separating them. The "fury poured out" isn't just for the nations, but also upon His own people, to strip away their entanglement with other peoples, just as He did in the Exodus. He's not allowing them to become like the nations they tried to imitate.
I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God declares He will forcibly remove His people from among the nations where they've scattered, not for immediate restoration to their land, but to gather them into a wilderness setting for judgment and purification. This action is described as an avenging one, distinct from their desire to assimilate with other peoples, highlighting God's determination to deal with them uniquely as His own. The passage looks beyond the Babylonian exile, anticipating a future scattering and a decisive gathering, mirroring the Exodus but marked by judgment before eventual restoration.
God’s actions can feel severe, even wrathful. But what if His judgment is actually a way of rescuing us from mixing with the wrong crowds?
In Ezekiel 20:34, God declares He will 'bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered.' This isn't just about bringing people back to their land. It's about God actively separating His people from the surrounding nations.
Think about it: Israel had a tendency to adopt the practices of the nations around them, even when they were scattered among them. God’s gathering action here is a forceful intervention. He won't let them completely blend in and lose their identity. It’s a divine statement: 'You are mine, and you will not become like them.' This separation is the first step in His plan to deal with them as His own distinct people.
God’s hand is 'mighty,' His arm is 'outstretched,' and His fury is 'poured out.' How can these words of judgment also be words of gathering and love?
The verse speaks of God gathering His people 'with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with fury poured out.' This is a powerful paradox! The same powerful actions that might seem purely destructive are also the means by which God accomplishes His redemptive purposes.
This isn't the unrestrained anger of a human. It's the righteous wrath against sin and idolatry that also acts as a protective force for His chosen people. It’s like a parent with a strong grip pulling a child away from a dangerous fire. The grip might feel harsh, but the intent is rescue. God's 'fury poured out' is directed the surrounding corrupting influences and His people's ultimate restoration and purified worship.

God’s gathering doesn't always lead straight home. Sometimes, He leads His people into a 'wilderness' to confront them directly.
Commentators note that this gathering, described with 'fury poured out,' isn't just about returning from exile. It points toward a future wilderness experience for the nation, akin to the Exodus from Egypt.
Ezekiel is looking beyond the immediate return from Babylon. This event in the wilderness will be a place where God 'will plead with them face to face' (as seen in related passages). It’s a space for raw confrontation with their sin and reaffirmation of His covenant. This wilderness isn't meant to be their permanent dwelling, but a crucible – a place of judgment and purification before they can truly inhabit God's promises with hearts transformed.
