Ezekiel 20:28-30

What does Ezekiel 20:28-30 mean?

What's easily missed here is that Israel’s turning to idolatry happened almost immediately after God brought them into the Promised Land. The verse highlights that as soon as they saw these prominent natural features—high hills and leafy trees—they immediately and everywhere set up their idolatrous worship, showing a deep-seated tendency to abandon God for the familiar practices of the Canaanites. This wasn't a slow drift but a quick adoption, turning God's promised gift into a stage for rebellion.

For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings. (I said to them, ‘What is the high place to which you go?’ So its name is called Bamah to this day.) “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go whoring after their detestable things?

What Ezekiel 20:28-30 means

After God had faithfully brought them into the Promised Land, fulfilling His solemn oath, the people immediately began to stray. Instead of worshipping God in the way He commanded, they latched onto the prominent high places and shady trees they found, adopting the idolatrous practices of the Canaanites. This verse describes their widespread participation in offering sacrifices and pouring out drink offerings at these illicit locations, a direct affront to God's covenant.

Blessing Turned to Blasphemy

God swore to give them this land, a place of rest and fulfillment. Yet, the moment they arrived, they twisted His gift into an offense. How can a place of blessing become a source of provocation?

This verse highlights a tragic irony: the land God promised, secured by His oath, became the very stage for Israel's rebellion.

A Land of Promise...

God's action was intentional and faithful. He brought them into Canaan, fulfilling a promise made to their ancestors (Ezekiel 20:5-6). This wasn't a casual act but a divine commitment, sealed by an oath ('I lifted up my hand'). The land was meant to be a place of blessing and testimony.

...Becomes a Place of Provocation

Yet, what did Israel do? As soon as they saw the natural landscape—the high hills and leafy trees—they saw opportunities for their worship, not God's. These became sites for illicit sacrifices and offerings. The 'high places' and 'thick trees' were common features in Canaanite worship, places where they appeased their gods. Israel adopted these very practices, turning God's promised gift into a source of His anger. Their offerings, meant to appease, instead 'provoked' Him.

The 'Provocation' of Their Offering

They offered sacrifices, aromas, and drink offerings – acts that, when done correctly, pleased God. So why were these specific actions called 'the provocation of their offering'?

The sin wasn't just they offered sacrifices, but , , and they offered them. The phrase 'the provocation of their offering' is key.
