Why a scroll? And why was it written on both sides?
The ancient scroll, or 'roll,' held specific significance that amplified the weight of Ezekiel's message.
Ancient Books and Their Form
Unlike our modern books, ancient scrolls were typically written on parchment or papyrus, rolled up and often secured. They were read by unrolling one end while rolling up the other, a process that made reading lengthy documents more involved.
Written Within and Without
Crucially, this scroll was written "within and without." Traditionally, scrolls were written only on the inside surface to avoid inconvenience. A scroll written on both sides indicated an exceptionally full, extensive, and perhaps overwhelming message. It signaled the sheer abundance and gravity of the judgment and events contained within God's word to Ezekiel.
