The command to "eat what I give you" isn't just about receiving God's message; it's a profound call to internalize it so completely that it becomes your sustenance and shapes your very being, mirroring how the prophet would literally consume a scroll in vision. This act signifies a complete absorption of God's words, transforming them from external communication to internal conviction that fuels the prophet's ministry.
“But you, son of man, hear what I say to you. Be not rebellious like that rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you.” And when I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, a scroll of a book was in it. And he spread it before me. And it had writing on the front and on the back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is commissioning Ezekiel to deliver a difficult message to the rebellious people of Israel. Right before this, God has described Israel as a house of rebellion, and now He directly addresses Ezekiel, commanding him not to be like them. This verse is part of a vision where Ezekiel is instructed to "eat" a scroll containing God's words, symbolizing the reception and internalizing of the prophecy he's meant to deliver.
God’s message to Ezekiel isn’t just information to be received; it’s a command to internalize. What does it truly mean to 'hear' God's word?
The command for Ezekiel to 'hear what I say to you' and 'open your mouth and eat what I give you' goes beyond simply listening. It’s about a deep, personal reception of God's message. The commentators highlight that this 'eating' is a powerful metaphor for taking God's word into one's heart, pondering it, and allowing it to nourish and strengthen the soul. This isn't a passive act; it requires active engagement, making the message a part of oneself, just as food becomes part of our physical being.
Ezekiel is warned against being like Israel, a 'rebellious house.' What does this warning reveal about the heart of obedience in God's service?
The instruction to Ezekiel, 'Be not rebellious like that rebellious house,' is a crucial directive. It underscores that God’s prophets, and indeed all His followers, are called to a higher standard of obedience. Rebellion, in this context, isn't just outright defiance; it includes hesitation, shrinking back from God's call, or refusing to accept His message. The prophet, like Moses and Jeremiah before him, faced an arduous and painful task. To refuse or be hesitant would be to mirror the very rebellion he was sent to confront. True service requires a willing heart, ready to receive and proclaim God's word, no matter the difficulty.
