This verse reveals that God’s judgment isn't fixed on who you were, but on who you are at any given moment. The promise of "surely live" hinges entirely on turning from all sins and embracing obedience, demonstrating that God's mercy is dynamically offered to the truly repentant, not just based on past actions.
“But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ezekiel is addressing the people's lament that God is unfair, blaming them for the sins of their ancestors. He counters this by showing God judges individuals based on their own actions, not their family's past. This passage presents a powerful hypothetical: even the most wicked person who truly repents and lives righteously will be spared and live, because God's judgment is always based on present obedience, not past transgressions.
Does God only remember our old mistakes? Ezekiel brings a radical message about God's perspective on who we are now.
The core message in Ezekiel 18 is about God's justice and mercy. For years, the people of Israel had been living under a shadow, perhaps believing they were doomed because of the sins of their ancestors. They were stuck thinking God's judgment was based solely on past actions, whether their own or their family's.
But Ezekiel announces a dramatic shift: God judges individuals based on their present state, not just their past record. This verse is the turning point, showing that a person's history doesn't seal their fate if they genuinely change. If a person who has lived wickedly decides to turn from all their sins and follow God's commands, God’s response is immediate and life-giving. His judgment isn't a permanent ledger that can't be corrected; it's dynamic and responsive to genuine repentance and obedience.
What does it mean to 'live' when facing God's judgment? It's more than just surviving; it's a fullness that cancels the past.
The promise here isn't just about escaping punishment; it's about receiving life. When Ezekiel says, 'he shall surely live; he shall not die,' he's talking about a profound restoration.

Ezekiel Delivers His Message
The prophet Ezekiel, living among the exiles in Babylon, delivers his powerful message of individual responsibility and God's justice. This chapter addresses the common belief that future generations would suffer for the sins of their ancestors.
This passage echoes Ezekiel's promise by highlighting God's forgiveness, stating He will 'forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more,' underscoring the complete blotting out of past transgressions for the repentant.
Isaiah 43:25This verse directly supports Ezekiel's message of renewal, declaring, 'I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; I will not remember your sins,' which reinforces the idea that repentance leads to a clean slate.
Luke 15:7Jesus' parable of the lost sheep illustrates the joy in heaven over a sinner who repents, mirroring Ezekiel's emphasis that God desires life for the wicked when they turn from their sins, not their death.
Acts 3:19This New Testament passage calls for repentance and turning to God, promising that 'sins may be wiped out,' which directly aligns with Ezekiel's assurance that a wicked person can live by turning from their sins and doing right.
Ezekiel 33:16This verse, also by Ezekiel, repeats the core message that if the wicked turn from sin and practice justice, 'he shall surely live; he shall not die,' reinforcing God's consistent promise of life through repentance.
