Ezekiel 16:49-50

What’s striking is that the verse doesn’t lead with Sodom’s infamous sexual sins. Instead, it names pride, luxury, and idleness as the root of their iniquity, leading to a profound neglect of the poor and needy. This highlights how prosperity without compassion can pave the way for deeper corruption.
Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty and did an abomination before me. So I removed them, when I saw it.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ezekiel's prophecy is an extended allegory, comparing Jerusalem to a foundling rescued and then unfaithful to God, her lover. After detailing Jerusalem's unfaithfulness with vivid imagery, Ezekiel turns to her "sister" cities, particularly Sodom, to highlight the root causes of their downfall. This verse explains that Sodom's ultimate sin wasn't just its infamous sexual immorality, but a deeper societal pride and careless luxury that led to a cruel indifference to the poor and needy.
We often associate Sodom with one notorious sin. But Ezekiel points to deeper issues that fueled their downfall. What happens when life gets too easy?
Ezekiel highlights that Sodom's core problem wasn't just outward actions, but an inward state born from abundance.
The Seeds of Sin
This isn't a condemnation of comfort itself, but of how comfort can breed a dangerous self-satisfaction and a disconnect from reality. When we have plenty, it's easy to become unmoored from our need for God and for others.
The most striking sin of Sodom, according to Ezekiel, isn't what they did, but what they failed to do. What does our inaction say about our hearts?
While Sodom's other sins are mentioned, Ezekiel singles out their lack of compassion for the vulnerable.
