Ezekiel 16:36-37

What does Ezekiel 16:36-37 mean?

The word for "filthiness" literally means "brass," and it's used here contemptuously. It points not just to monetary dealings, but to the poisonous and shameful "rust" of Israel's corrupted alliances and idolatry, exposing them in their deepest vulnerability. This brassy, corrosive impurity is what led to their nakedness being revealed and their children sacrificed.

Thus says the Lord GOD, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them, therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.

What Ezekiel 16:36-37 means

Ezekiel is detailing the unfaithfulness of Jerusalem, personified as a harlot, to God. This verse serves as a direct accusation, listing the specific sins – promiscuous idolatry with foreign lovers and the horrific sacrifice of children – that have exposed her to utter disgrace. The preceding verses describe how Jerusalem has lavished her resources and herself on these illicit relationships, setting the stage for God's declaration of judgment and her impending public shame before these same foreign powers.

The Scandal of "Brass"

Ezekiel uses a word that sounds like money but points to something far more shameful. What does this strange word reveal about Jerusalem's sin?

The verse opens with a stark declaration: "Because thy filthiness was poured out..."

A Word for Shame: "Brass" The original Hebrew word here, often translated as "filthiness" or "shame," literally means "brass." This is fascinating! Some scholars suggest it's a contemptuous way of referring to money – the very thing Jerusalem lavished on foreign lovers (like Egypt and Assyria) for alliances. They were essentially paying for their betrayal of God.
More Than Just Money However, the context, especially the parallelism with "nakedness," points to a deeper, more visceral meaning. "Brass" could also evoke the idea of a poisonous, shameful residue or even the metallic taste of a vile disease contracted through promiscuous sexual sin. It’s a loaded term, encompassing both the corrupting pursuit of alliances and the moral decay that accompanied it.

Double Exposure: Lovers and Idols

Jerusalem's unfaithfulness wasn't just a private matter; it was a public spectacle involving both foreign powers and false gods. How does Ezekiel link these two forms of betrayal?

Ezekiel doesn't mince words. He lays out the twin pillars of Jerusalem's apostasy:
