Usually, the prostitute is paid. But in Ezekiel's shocking image, Jerusalem is the one paying. What does this inversion tell us about God's people?
Ezekiel uses a jarring reversal to expose Jerusalem's deep corruption.
The Standard Transaction
In the ancient world, prostitutes were hired. They offered their services for a price. The man paid the woman.
Jerusalem's Perverse Exchange
But Ezekiel declares Jerusalem acted like no ordinary prostitute. Instead of being paid by her lovers (the nations she turned to for alliances and idolatry), she paid them. She used God's resources – her wealth, her status, her spiritual devotion – to bribe foreign powers for their favor and protection. This wasn't just seeking comfort; it was actively pursuing destructive alliances and idolatrous practices with God's own 'gifts'.
